Intent
At Consett Juniors, we believe that high-quality Art lessons will inspire children to think innovatively and develop creative understanding. Our Art curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills using a range of media and materials. Children learn the skills of drawing, painting, printing, collage, textiles, 3D work and digital art and are given the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas. Children will be introduced to a range of works and develop knowledge of the styles and vocabulary used by famous artists. The skills they acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics, allowing children to use their art skills to reflect on and explore topics in greater depth. In Art, children are expected to be reflective and evaluate their work, thinking about how they can make changes and keep improving. This should be meaningful and continuous throughout the process, with evidence of age-related verbal and written refection. Children are encouraged to take risks and experiment and then reflect on why some ideas and techniques are successful or not for a particular project.
Implementation:
To help us deliver the curriculum for Art & Design, we use the Kapow Scheme of Work. The curriculum focuses on 5 main areas to aid the delivery of the subject:
Making Skills,
Generating Ideas,
Formal Elements of Art & Design
Knowledge of Artists
Evaluating
Lessons within each unit are designed to be taught in sequential order, with the exception of the Skills and Formal elements units, which can be taught in any order. These two units feature within each of the year groups and develop the discrete skills and techniques of art, craft and design.
Art & Design is taught in half termly blocks, we alternate Art and Music.
Children have their own art books, which follow the children throughout their time at Consett Junior School, this also allows children, parents and staff to see the progress the children have made over time in this subject.
We also take the opportunity to share our children’s work around the classroom or across the school when we have the opportunity to do so.
Our Long Term Scheme of Work can be accessed here: CJS Art Curriculum Overview
We support our work in class by using Knowledge Organisers to support with new vocabulary and Key skills.
The Progression document covers the various aspects of the Art & Design curriculum which we follow:
