Curriculum – History

History, at Consett Junior School, forms an integral and valued part of the curriculum. We deliver a creative History program which encourages children to understand how the past has shaped their own identity set within our social, political, cultural and economic relationships. History fires the pupil’s imaginations and curiosity, as it is about real people. It plays an essential part in preparing us for living and working in the modern world by learning to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change and the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups. The curriculum aims to provide children with a chronologically secure knowledge and understanding of British and World history. In addition, children will learn about significant historical events in their local area and, using key skills compare these to the wider world.

History involves far more than the learning of facts. Children are encouraged to ask perceptive questions and to develop skills of enquiry, analysis, interpretation and problem solving. This enables the children to evaluate evidence, reach their own conclusions and argue their point of view – skills that are all essential to adult life.

Our aims for History are:

  • To make History an engaging, informative and enlightening learning experience
  • To develop a sense of chronology.
  • To enable children to learn about the past and its influences on life today.
  • To give children exposure to a range of sources of information and resources.
  • To encourage the children to investigate open ended questions which can be answered in a variety of ways.
  • To incorporate the study of different societies, cultures, countries and classes into lessons.
  • To compare and contrast between different periods of history.
  • To ensure that children are aware of the bias of interpretation of historical evidence and take this into consideration.

History is taught twice a week for a total of two hours. Throughput the children’s historical journey during their time at Consett Junior School, pupils will investigate each topic through a Historical Enquiry. Through this approach historical skills are developed and revisited each term to enable each class to develop and build key skills.
