Connecting Classroom Project – Nepal

October 10, 2019 by dawnraine

We are very excited to inform you that we have received funding from the British Council to be part of a Connecting Classroom project this year.  We have been partnered with Global Pathshala school, Bhaktapur in Kathmandu, Nepal and will be working alongside staff and children within this setting to look at the issue of waste disposal at both a local and global level.

http://www.globalpathshala.edu.np/welcome-to-global-pathshala.html

As part of the project Mrs Leggett will be travelling to Nepal in November to work in our partner school, get to know the staff and children and bring back first-hand resources for the children in Consett.  Similarly, the Nepalese teacher will visit our school in June 2020 to meet the children, share experiences from Nepal and learn about our community. Both Beechdale Nursery and Consett Infant school are also involved with this project.

This means that the children will take part in a number of activities such as monitoring the amount of litter produced within school, considering how this is disposed of, designing a zero-waste meal to be cooked for lunch, planning improvements around school for recycling waste material and writing a global pledge to be adopted by all children.  The children in our partner school will be carrying out similar activities and the results will be shared and discussed collaboratively along the way.

This is a fantastic opportunity for our children to learn about the Nepalese culture and customs, expand their horizons and develop a worldwide view of environmental health and how these impact upon a culture other than their own through first hand study and exploration.  We will be organising a celebration event at the end of the year to celebrate this work to which you will all be invited.  However, I anticipate that you will learn a lot more about this project as it develops, either through correspondence from school or conversations with your child.
