Community Noro and Respiratory Virus – Important Information

November 26, 2019 by dawnraine

We have sought advice from the Health Protection Agency today as we are seeing a rise in absences due to Respiratory Flu like Viruses and some cases of Noro Virus, over the last week. We have been informed that this is not a school issue, but it is a wider community issue. You may have already heard that many schools are affected.

One class in particular has been affected by the Respiratory Flu like Virus, with 9 children being absent in that class yesterday.

We have not been advised to close our school, but have been advised to ensure a very stringent deep clean is carried out over the coming weeks. Our Site Manager, Mr O’Dowd, and the cleaning team have a very good cleaning routine in school already, but this will be a priority focus. However, we cannot avoid the virus spreading as it is a community issue, and if families are sending children in whilst still unwell, then the virus will still spread.

All children in school today will be bringing their water bottle home for a deep clean. If your child is off school then please ensure they are well enough to return when they do. If your child has had sickness or diarrhoea then you must follow school policy and keep them off school for 48 hours following their last episode. YOU MUST RING SCHOOL IF YOUR CHILD IS ABSENT!

Most importantly we have been advised to stress to our families, that there is no need to panic, it is in the community and these are called Winter Bug Viruses as they occur every year around these winter months.

If your child currently has a low level of absence, and it is what we would classify as ‘persistent’, then we do require a doctors note from you to support the absence of your child. We will request this from you if your child’s absence is below 90%.

Due to the high numbers of schools affected in the community, the HPA have put some up to date information together. This has been given to the children today, and attached below.

The Great Chocoplat – Book Signing

November 20, 2019 by dawnraine

Chris Callaghan has spent the day in school today talking to the children about his book, ‘The Great Chocoplot’.

The children have really enjoyed his time spent with them and were inspired by his love of books and writing, some children bought books at the end of the school day, following the order form sent out last week.

We will be putting all photographs below for you to browse. If your child purchased a book, Chris signed this and wrote a personal message in the front. it would be great to add these to our gallery too.

Please take a photograph of your child holding their book and showing the message and email this to consettjunior@durhamlearning.net and we will add this to our gallery.

Thanks

Mrs Raine

Mrs Leggett’s Adventures in Nepal – Connecting Classrooms

November 19, 2019 by dawnraine

On Sunday we were messaged by Mrs Leggett, informing of her safe arrival in Nepal.  She siad that she arrived safely after a very long journey.  Everything went well and the Nepalese Head Teachers were all there waiting to greet them at the airport.  They checked into a lovely hotel and needed sleep, even though it was only 1.00 p.m. in Nepal.

Mrs Leggett has promised to send many photographs so our children can follow her on her Journey this week.  Yesterday (Monday 18th November) they visited a Buddhist Temple and they all visited one of the schools to have their first meeting about the Connecting Classrooms project. Tomorrow they will set off to visit their partner school! Very exciting!

On Tuesday (19th), Mrs Leggett visited our partner school Global Pathshala, Mrs Leggett observed their meditation class and the children.  The children also have a music group and are very good, their instrument are very different to ours.  Mrs Leggett has found so many similarities between their school and ours, they even enjoy performing in shows!

On Wednesday (20th), Ms Leggett visited a statue of Shiva with Dila who is the Headteacher of Glabal Pathshala.  The children put on a fancy dress competition for Mrs Leggett.

Children in Need

November 15, 2019 by dawnraine

Before I go any further, can I just say an ENORMOUS thank you to everyone. Today we have been fundraising for Children in Need.

The costumes and efforts from all today has been phenomenal, clearly a lot of time spent on making many of them. There were so, so many donations of sweets that children were able to go back and back again for turns on the tombola.

As a school community we have today raised a breath-taking £518 for Children in Need. The £518 cheque will be sent to Children and Need

Thank you.

Author Chris Callaghan – Is spending the day in our school

November 13, 2019 by dawnraine

Chris Callaghan, author of ‘The Great Chocoplot’ will be spending the day in our school on Tuesday 19th November.

He is a children’s writer in a similar genre to Roald Dahl. We are very excited and are looking forward to him inspiring the children.

He will be focusing his work around his new book, ‘The Great Chocoplot’, and we have already introduced this book to our children in assembly.

He will have copies of his book available to sell on the day (£6.99), this is entirely your choice. A letter to pre-order and pay for a copy of this book will be sent home tomorrow (14th November).

BBC Newsround and BIG

November 13, 2019 by dawnraine

We were recently asked to take part in some work with BBC Newsround, in conjunction with the Big Award – An Anti Bullying group our school currently works alongside. Some of our year 6 pupils have been interviewed in regards to the pressures of the modern world, social media and the like…as you can see from the video link at the bottom the children were a credit to their families and the school. Future media personalities clearly!

The Big Award group comes into school at least once a year to work alongside our children and staff to ensure we are up to date in terms of training and prevention of bullying within school. They support us at all other times in the year, should we need them. We are also mindful of the modern world and the pressures of social media – so are constantly training our staff and ‘Buddy’s’ to deal with these changing pressures.

Well done to our Evie, Caitlin, Eva, Elliot, Brandon and Robert, we are so very proud of you all. It was a pleasure to see them talk openly about their feelings, they are a credit to our school.

This is currently anti-bullying awareness week and we have our BIG representatives in school this Friday for a special assembly, we would love to see many of our parents/carers there for this. It is usually a very fun and interactive assembly. Children can also wear odd socks on Friday, which is part of their goal of raising awareness, children can make this fun by tucking their trousers into them!
