It is week two of the school closure and we are really missing our children and families. In a bid to stay positive and find some comfort in these unprecedented times, we are welcoming any drawings, pictures, photographs and written messages. These can be for the whole CJS family showing what you have been doing, or for specific friends and teachers who are missing each other and want to let them know…Lets go gallery crazy over the next few weeks!
Messages from our children and families:
“Freyas (H) missing all the teachers and her friends in Class 4.
She’s getting lots of splits practice in!
Ben Wilson misses you all
“Some pics below of Caleb keeping busy when he’s not doing school work or playing on the PS4!
Planting, growing (not just basil, radish and beetroot but finally his second front tooth too! 😉 ) watering… Mastering making his favourite food, pancakes! Tea outdoors followed by toasting marshmallows on the fire. A special delivery of his next set of all stars cricket gear… to name a few things…
Caleb is missing staff and friends, sending hugs, well wishes and be safe xxx”

First of all, can we say a MASSIVE thank you to everyone who joined in with the 8.00 p.m. clap for our NHS last night. Our home estates were amazing, the atmosphere and support from our community laves us tearful and speechless. We have an amazing team of NHS workers and they are doing a brilliant job in uncertain times. We do appreciate you…
In a bid to try and keep our families upbeat as they isolate together, can you now send in your most ‘silly’ faces…these will be uploaded to the gallery below. For children (and adults) this will get the laughter going, it will also be a chance for children to see pictures of their friends, who we are sure they are all missing.
Stay safe
The CJS staff team.

Work Packs are being prepared in school for children to access from home should children already be in self-isolation or to prepare for partial/whole school closure.
Today (18th March), all primary contacts have been sent a text with their class website link to access their work from home. The texts are individual and direct your child to complete a particular ‘PACK’.
If you have not received your text, please contact the school.
Paper packs of the same work are being produced and will be ready for Friday, should we need to send them home. If your child is already in self-isolation, you can collect your pack from school from noon on Friday 20th March.
Thank you for your continued support and patience at this very difficult time.
Kind regards
Mr Dixon
Head Teacher
On Wednesday, our Year 6 children arrived in school to find lots of feathers scattered around the classroom and a copy of the first chapter of our new class novel ‘Skellig’ on their table. The children were very excited and intrigued by all of this and are desperate to read the book.
Two of the children from Class 8 have been doing exceptionally well with their reading in school and at home. So much so that they have read all of the books in school!!! As a reward for this, the girls were asked to write a wish list of books and school have purchased these for their class. Well done Nona and Jasmine!
This morning in assembly one of our Year 6 girls, Jody Brown, was given a special recognition award from Consett Rotary Club.
Jody has been an asset to our school over the last four years. Staff in school agree she is one of the most kind-hearted children we have ever had the privilege to teach. Jody is caring, well mannered, patient and helpful. She is an excellent friend and I’m sure all of her friends feel lucky to have such a positive, loyal and trustworthy person in their lives. Jody has shown real determination during her time at Consett Junior school, she never gives up and always strives to do her best. She listens to and acts on all of the advice she is given and has made excellent progress academically and also in the band where she started off in year 3 playing cornet and now plays the tenor horn. Jody will always go out of her way to help anyone who needs it and that’s why we feel she deserves to be presented with this year’s special recognition award. Well Done Jody!

After School Nurture club returned yesterday and all the children who attended had a brilliant time, as did the staff. The first session allowed the children to mix with children from other classes and year groups and start to embed new relationships. All our children have different personalities and levels of confidence, a brilliant balance and good chemistry for this group.
Children started the session drawing things they like/enjoy alongside playing their choice of music and games with the props we supplied. Check out the gallery below…

The whole school attendance for February was an excellent 96.89% which is a slight drop from January but we are still above our floor target of 96%. Sickness absences are always going to impact, we have 218 pupils on roll therefore completely unavoidable. Unauthorised absences are still evident in all year groups, with year 6 being the highest. If daily reporting to school is in place in year 3, then by year 6 we should have little to none. Most parents/carers are very good at informing us of the reason for their child’s absence, which can be done via calling, texting or emailing the school.
All year groups are above the floor target!
The February attendance by year group is as follows:
Year 3 – 96.18%
Year 4 – 96.56%
Year 5 – 96.74% –
Year 6 – 98.00% – EXCELLENT YEAR 6 – TOP AGAIN!
As year 6 have once again achieved the best attendance for February each child in year 6 will be given a cake/giant cookie next Friday, 6th March as their reward.
Class 5 (Miss Breheny) have knocked Class 8 off the top spot and achieved the reward for the best class attendance at an outstanding 98.45%, well done! The Class 5 reward for this is a FREE non-uniform day which will also be next Friday. Mind, Class 8 were very close at 98.26!

Today we have had a very special and memorable day in school to celebrate the end of treatment for Ethan and Emily. Both children have been undergoing treatment for Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL), Ethan has had three years of treatment and Emily two years. As our school community have been part of their journey and this is such an amazing time, we decided to celebrate with them in school.
This morning the whole school came together for a special assembly and the families and friends of Ethan and Emily came along. Mr Dixon introduced the assembly and talked about why we had all come together, after this there was a very emotional slideshow of memories of both the children which highlighted the importance of strong families and also that they are two very brave and strong children. Following the slideshow we welcomed Jagoda Campbell-Hewson, who is a cancer specialist nurse at the RVI and has grown so close to the children throughout their treatment, to talk to the children about their type of cancer and what treatment they have had. This was a very engaging and informative assembly and she delivered it sensitively and even brought humour and audience engagement into the mix! The children asked many questions and left with an understanding of ALL.
At the end of the assembly Mr Dixon talked about their journey and how amazed he was at the care and sensitivity of all the children in school, as they have supported them on their way to recovery. A huge thank you Taylor Shaw as one of their employees (and lucky for us she is also one of our parents), Helen Merritt made two AMAZING cakes, one for each child as each of their roads to recovery were individual to them.
Finally, although this is not completely the end of treatment for Ethan and Emily, as they will still need to have check ups, and the worry will never be too far away from their parents minds, we wanted to mark this in some way in school. So, as the children ‘rang the bell’ at the RVI we have purchased a bell and individual plaques which have been put up in school. So even after the children move on through their lives and we are a memory we hope they treasure, their bravery and resiliency will echo through the ethos of the school and all will remember two of the bravest children we were blessed to teach.
A huge thank you to all of our families for always keeping these children in mind at times when yours have been poorly. Today we have raised £139.00 for Wards 4 and 14 of the RVI.
We have enjoyed a very ‘dancy’ lunch and the catering team did an amazing job of serving almost 160 lunches and decorating the hatch with balloons and ribbons donated to them by a flower shop in Stanley.
